Healthcare Caterers International

June 2, 2005, HCI Headquarters, St. Charles, Illinois:

First-Ever International Nutrition Care Symposium Planned for July 24
One of the highlights of this year's meeting is the first-ever Novartis International Symposium on Nutrition Care — brought to the meeting by Healthcare Caterers International (HCI), a year-old coalition of nine healthcare foodservice associations from around the globe. A distinguished panel comprised of international experts will gather on Sunday, July 24, to discuss the latest trends, initiatives, and challenges that are being addressed in their countries. The annual symposium, sponsored by Novartis Nutrition of Switzerland, will be held in other HCI countries for the next several years, so DMA is privileged to host this event while it is here in America.

Dietary Managers Association Attracts Washington, D.C. Notables as Speakers for 45th Annual Meeting
Several impressive presenters — including many from government positions in Washington, D.C. — are on the program agenda for the 45th Annual Meeting & Expo of the Dietary Managers Association (DMA), scheduled for July 24-28, 2005 at the historic Omni Shoreham Hotel in Washington. The meeting will feature about two dozen speakers who will share their expertise with the nearly 1,000 foodservice professionals from across the country who are expected to attend.

DMA is honored that Deputy Surgeon General of the United States Kenneth P. Moritsugu will present opening remarks during the Annual Meeting. Rear Admiral Moritsugu, MD, MPH has served as Deputy Surgeon General since 1998, working as the principal assistant and advisor to the Surgeon General. Since 1994, Dr. Moritsugu has advocated for organ and tissue donation and transplantation. He will speak on that subject on Monday, July 25, as DMA announces its participation in a nationwide program to promote organ and tissue donation among its nearly 15,000 members.

DMA is pleased that two other Washington, D.C. luminaries may make special appearances at the Annual Meeting. Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert (R-Ill) and Senator Ted Kennedy (D-Mass) are invited guests tentatively scheduled to speak on healthcare issues and the current political climate during separate events at the DMA Annual Meeting.

Additional Washington-based speakers will be sharing their expertise with meeting attendees. Jean L. Lloyd, MS, RD, National Nutritionist for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Administration on Aging, will discuss "Home and Community-Based Long-Term Care" on Thursday, July 28. Jennifer Weber, MS, RD, Manager of Nutrition Policy for the American Dietetic Association office in Washington, will discuss "The New Food Guidance System and the 2005 Dietary Guidelines for Americans." Weber assisted in the development of the revised Dietary Guidelines. Glenda Lewis, MSPH, of the Food and Drug Administration in College Park, Md., will present "2005 FDA Food Code Update."

The overall meeting agenda is diverse and packed with information on menu planning, sanitation training, surviving downsizing, understanding food costs, school nutrition, food safety, and much more.

The 2005 DMA Annual Meeting & Expo promises to deliver dynamic education and product information to dietary managers working in health care, long-term care, assisted living, schools, correctional centers, and other non-commercial foodservice settings.
